How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photo Session
Family photo sessions are a beautiful way to capture special moments, but getting kids to cooperate can feel overwhelming. As a San Diego family photographer, I focus on capturing candid, natural moments—the giggles, snuggles, and real connections that make your family unique. With a little preparation, your session can be smooth, fun, and stress-free!
1. Set Expectations in a Fun Way
Instead of telling your kids they have to “behave” for photos, frame it as a fun family outing! Let them know they’ll get to play, explore, and be themselves while I capture real, joyful moments—no stiff poses required.
2. Expect a Mix of Posed and Candid Moments
At the start of the session, I’ll guide your family through a few lightly posed shots to make sure we get some classic family portraits. But after that, the rest of the session is all about genuine, candid moments—so there’s no pressure for kids to sit still the whole time. They can move, play, and interact naturally while I capture your family’s true dynamic.
3. Prepare for a Sunset Session
I schedule all my family sessions one hour before sunset for the most flattering golden light. This means preparing kids for a slightly later evening by adjusting naps or mealtimes that day to keep them happy and energized.
4. Choose Comfortable Outfits
Pick outfits that are stylish yet comfortable. Avoid scratchy fabrics or stiff shoes that might make kids fussy. Neutral tones and soft, natural fabrics photograph beautifully and allow your family's connection to shine.
5. Plan Around Their Best Time of Day
Since sunset sessions are in the evening, consider a later nap or an early dinner to help little ones stay in a good mood. A well-fed, rested child is much more likely to enjoy the session!
6. Bring Snacks and Small Comforts
Pack mess-free snacks like crackers or fruit gummies in case they need a quick energy boost. A favorite stuffed animal or small toy can also help comfort younger kids.
7. Let Them Be Themselves
My sessions are all about capturing candid, real moments—not forcing smiles. If your child wants to run, play, or be silly, that’s perfect! The best photos come from natural interactions, and I’ll guide you into moments that feel organic and joyful.
8. Stay Positive and Relaxed
Kids pick up on energy, so if you’re calm and having fun, they will too! Don’t stress about perfection—some of the most beautiful moments happen in the in-between, unplanned moments.
